GALEX is the combination of the words Galesburg and Exhibit. What began as a regional exhibition has grown into a national competition and exhibition celebrating its 57th year.  Open to artists working in all mediums, this year's juror, Jenny Chi, who is an active artist and educator and travels extensively in Italy, will award over $2,500 in prizes, choosing over 70 works for the exhibition.

JUROR

Jenny Chi graduated from New York Academy of Art and is an active artist and educator who travels extensively in Italy. Jenny’s many awards include the White House Blue Ribbon Christmas Project, the Duval County Artist in Residence, Carl Steinsieck Memorial and George Sugarman Foundation.  Her recent mini documentary series is aired with Urbana Public Arts Program in “Art Now” episode 84.  She is currently the Professor in the Art Department at Eastern Illinois University, where she teaches courses in Painting and Drawing.

Inspired by the human figure, Jenny Chi paints in a style reminiscent of the old masters, conducting a personal, sometimes rather sly dialogue with the Italian Renaissance in particular. Her amicable appropriation of the Best of the West makes one aware of art not just as finished work but as a way of seeing, an inexhaustible language that can be learned and shared and always retains the power of saying new things.

GALEX 57 National Juried Competition and Exhibition welcomes artists of diverse backgrounds and expertise.  I look for artwork that shows excellent use of materials, and innovative concepts.  I believe Art is an intellectual exercise, I am especially interested in artwork that communicates with its audience on different levels of emotions and symbolism.
— Jenny Chi
